Apple picks Google Gemini to power Siri's 2026 overhaul

Apple picks Google Gemini to power Siri’s 2026 overhaul

Apple dropped a bombshell on January 12, confirming that Google’s Gemini AI will power the long-delayed Siri overhaul. The multi-year partnership, worth an estimated $5 billion according to Financial Times sources, marks a major shift in the AI platform war—and a setback for OpenAI, which currently handles complex ChatGPT queries in Siri.

The announcement came through a joint statement to CNBC rather than a splashy press event. “After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models,” Apple said.

Translation: Apple’s own AI efforts fell too far behind, and they needed outside help fast.

What’s actually changing

The revamped Siri launches with iOS 26.4 in March or April 2026. According to The Information, users will get seven major upgrades:

Better conversational answers — Gemini handles factual and world knowledge questions more naturally than current Siri. Think ChatGPT-style responses without the awkward handoff.

Deep personal context — Siri will pull information across Mail, Messages, Calendar, and other apps. Example: “What time is my mother’s flight and where should we have lunch?” gets answered using multiple data sources.

On-screen awareness — Siri sees what’s on your screen and can act on it. No more copying text or switching apps manually.

Per-app controls — Deeper integration means Siri can do multi-step actions within apps, not just open them.

The catch? No Google or Gemini branding appears in the interface. Apple is fine-tuning Gemini’s responses to sound like Siri, not Google Assistant.

Why this deal happened now

Apple delayed the Siri AI upgrade twice in 2025 despite marketing it heavily. Internal models weren’t competitive with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Meanwhile, Google’s Gemini 3 launched in late 2025 with impressive reasoning capabilities and multimodal processing that Apple couldn’t match.

The timing also matters for Google. The company briefly hit a $4 trillion market cap in January 2026, surpassing Apple for the first time since 2019. Locking in Apple’s 2+ billion active devices gives Gemini instant scale advantage over OpenAI.

For Apple, outsourcing AI infrastructure saves massive R&D costs. Building comparable models would cost more than the $5 billion partnership, and Apple was years behind. This deal lets them compete immediately while developing their own tech.

Privacy questions remain

Apple insists user data stays private. Gemini runs on Apple’s own infrastructure through Private Cloud Compute, the same system that keeps ChatGPT queries separate from OpenAI’s training data.

But here’s the thing: Google’s business model fundamentally conflicts with Apple’s privacy stance. The partnership works only if Gemini models truly operate in isolation, with zero data flowing back to Google for training or analysis. Apple hasn’t detailed the technical implementation yet.

What happens to ChatGPT?

The existing OpenAI integration isn’t going anywhere—yet. Apple told CNBC they’re “not making any changes” to the ChatGPT agreement. Users can still opt into ChatGPT for complex queries requiring its world knowledge.

But ChatGPT now shifts from default partner to optional add-on. OpenAI loses the privileged position it held since Apple Intelligence launched in 2024. If Gemini handles most queries well, ChatGPT usage will likely crater.

The bigger picture

This partnership reshapes the AI assistant landscape. Google already powers Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series (800 million devices by end of 2026). Add Apple’s install base, and Gemini reaches 2.5+ billion devices—more than any other AI model.

OpenAI’s advantage? It remains independent and can work with any hardware maker. But losing default status on Apple devices is a massive blow when consumer AI adoption is still early-stage.

For businesses building AI features, the message is clear: fragmentation is accelerating. Users might interact with Gemini on iPhone, ChatGPT on Windows, and Claude on Android tablets—all within the same workflow. Cross-platform AI strategy just became mandatory.

The revamped Siri launches in 3-4 months. We’ll see if Google’s models deliver the “innovative new experiences” Apple promised, or if this partnership is just a stopgap while Apple builds its own replacement.
