Suno v5.5 update: clone your voice and train the model on your music

Suno shipped v5.5 on March 26, 2026 — and it is a different kind of release from everything that came before it. Previous updates focused on audio quality and vocal realism. This one is about identity. The company describes it as “our best and most expressive model yet,” and for once that framing is accurate: v5.5 is built around making AI-generated music sound like a specific person rather than a generic output.

Three features ship with the update: Voices, Custom Models, and My Taste. They target different parts of the personalization problem, but they are designed to work together.

Voices: cloning your own voice

Voices is the headline feature and, according to Suno, its most requested capability by far. Pro and Premier subscribers can now upload or record their own vocals and generate tracks that sing in their actual voice. The platform accepts clean a cappella recordings for the best results, fully produced tracks if that is all you have, or live microphone input. The higher the quality of the source audio, the less training data required.

The implementation includes an identity verification step that distinguishes this from a basic voice upload. After submitting audio, Suno displays a short phrase and asks you to read or sing it in real time. The system then matches your live delivery against the uploaded recording. If they do not match, the voice profile is not created. Voice profiles are private by default — only the creator can use them to generate new tracks. Sharing is planned but not yet live in this release.

The verification step has an obvious limitation: existing AI voice models of public figures could potentially fool the check. Suno acknowledges this. The safeguard is designed to raise the barrier rather than eliminate misuse entirely.

Custom Models: training on your catalog

Custom Models lets paid users group a set of their own tracks and use that collection as a stylistic reference for generation. A minimum of six songs is required to create a custom model, which you then name and apply when prompting. The result is a version of v5.5 tuned toward a specific sonic direction rather than a single track — useful for producers with a defined sound who want outputs that stay inside it.

Custom Models and Voices are designed to be used together. Voices captures how you sound. Custom Models captures how your music sounds. Combined, they give the platform enough of your creative identity to generate tracks that sit closer to your existing catalog rather than generic AI output.

My Taste: automatic preference learning

My Taste is the third feature and the only one available to all users including free tier. The system tracks your generating and listening habits inside Suno — preferred genres, instrumentation, mood, lyrical style — and builds a taste profile over time. Clicking the wand icon next to the style input field applies that profile automatically, generating a style prompt tailored to your patterns rather than requiring you to write one from scratch. The longer you use the platform, the more accurate the automatic prompts become.

Context and what comes next

The v5.5 launch landed on the same day Google unveiled Lyria 3 Pro, its updated AI music system from DeepMind. The simultaneous timing underscores how competitive the category has become in early 2026, with Suno, Udio, Google, and a growing list of challengers all iterating on quality and control simultaneously.

Suno says the personalization infrastructure in v5.5 lays the groundwork for a new generation of music models it plans to launch with music industry partners later in 2026.
